To help, we've listed below the main factors to consider when deciding where to put a spa pool or swim spa. After reading, you should have a good idea where to put a spa at your place.

Where is the best place to put a spa pool?

You can put a spa or swim spa almost anywhere in your garden or backyard as long as there is a solid, level surface with an electrical supply close by.

How much room do I need for a spa pool?

One of the most important factors in deciding where to put a spa pool or swim spa is the size of the spa itself, and how much space you have around it.

It’s not just about making room for the spa itself. You may also need to think about things like service access, pool barriers and more. Learn more below.

Some things to think about:

  • How big is your spa and how much space will it take up?
  • Will there be enough space around it to comfortably enter and exit it?
  • Is there room to set up steps, if needed, and enough clear space to safely walk around it?

When considering how much room you'll need for your spa, a simple rule of thumb is to keep at least 1.6 meters of clear space on the access side of the spa (usually the side where the control panel is). That’s one metre for spa access and 600mm for steps, which will enable you to hop in and out safely.

Of course, a lot depends on the type of installation you are planning. For example, if you are placing your spa in the ground or in-built into a deck, you may not need to leave space for steps.

Can I use VR or AR technology to see my spa in place?

Yes, you can use Spa World's Augmented Reality (AR) tool to see your spa, or any of our products, in your space – virtually.

The image below from one of our customer's is a good example of how you can use AR to see your new spa at your place, and work out how it will look.

What if the spa needs maintainence?

The equipment bay housing the spa’s control system, pumps and sanitation system should be easily accessible.

If not, it could be difficult (and potentially costly) accessing any equipment for servicing or if anything needs repairing.

You’ll need a minimum of 500mm of access space otherwise you’ll run into issues when you need to get into this area.

If you’re planning to put your spa into the ground or into the deck you will need to consider service access before construction begins.

Can I fit a spa cover lifter?

A cover lifter is the one spa accessory you’ll definitely want to invest in. Cover lifters have effectively ended the days of lifting and lugging heavy covers, making covering and uncovering your spa a breeze.

You’ll need some room to accommodate one though, so allow 200mm on each side of your spa and 600mm at the back for the cover to rest when open.

You will also want to consider where the cover and cover lifter is going to open and stack so it doesn’t block your view and can provide a wind and privacy block – depending on your situation.

Do I need a spa pool fence or barrier?

Have you factored in a spa pool barrier or fencing regulations? Are wondering "Do I need a fence for my spa?" or "Do I need planning permission for a spa?".

Rules around spa and pool barriers can vary from region to region. You'll want to talk to your local council about any regulations in your area before installing a pool, spa or swim spa.

If you do need to install a spa barrier, it’s important to have factored in room to accomodate any rules and requirements. For example, there can be rules around distance from the boundary and height that you may not be aware of and that could affect where you place your spa.

How do I make my spa private?

Arguably one of the most important considerations in spa pool placement is privacy.

No matter how much you like your neighbours, chances are you won’t get maximum enjoyment from your spa if you’re being overlooked.

There are many things you can do to create a private, secluded space for your spa or swim spa.

For example:

  • Do you have a spot where a fence, mature trees or other greenery will shield your spa from prying eyes?
  • Can you install or add height to an existing fence?
  • Is planting a hedge an option?
  • What about adding a privacy screen or trellis?
  • Would some large potted plant do the trick?
  • How about an outdoor umbrella, gazebo, or a pergola with privacy blinds?

As mentioned above, keep in mind too that your spa cover, combined with a cover lifter, can act as an instant privacy wall – just make sure you attach the cover lifter so it opens and stacks the cover on the side you want to shield.

Whichever way to choose to make your spa private, it's important to factor that in when deciding where to position your spa.

How will my spa affect the neighbours?

While most spas operate reasonably quietly, the people inside them do not.

Given spas are often a place for us to connect with family and friends, be mindful of how this social side of owning a spa might affect your neighbours or anyone sleeping inside your house. This is likely to influence the placement of your spa.

Which way do I want my spa to face?

It pays to think about what you want to look at while relaxing in your spa.

Is there a picturesque landscape or specific part of your garden you want to soak up from your spa? Or does the glittering night sky hold more allure?

Whatever your view will be, think carefully about how to make the most of it when positioning your spa.

Which seats in your spa are likely to be used the most? What would you like to be looking at? The answers to these questions will help you decide which way to place the spa.

We hope this article has helped you in your decision making process.
