what to use instead of chlorine hero

Keeping your spa or hot tub clean and safe for use is essential for your health and overall enjoyment. In this article, we'll explore some of the best Lithium Hypochlorite Spa Sanitiser replacements that are effective, easy to use, and environmentally friendly.

We'll cover:

What is spa lithium?

Lithium hypochlorite (LiClO) is a sanitising product that was commonly used in the past for sanitising swimming pools and spa pools. It was available in a liquid form or as granules.

It is no longer commonly used as the demand for Lithium has grown massively with growth in demand for electric vehicles and battery-powered electronic devices.

Is Lithium Hypochlorite Chlorine?

Yes, Lithium Hypochlorite is a form of Chlorine and has between 28% and 35% available free chlorine.

Spa lithium shortage

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for electric vehicles and electronic devices using lithium-ion batteries like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and more. Because of this, the raw materials used to make lithium spa sanitiser are being re-purposed into these industries.

This means Lithium Hypochlorite is no longer readily available as a sanitising product for spa pools, swim spas and swimming pools.

If you had a spa or pool in the past and used lithium hypochlorite as your sanitiser, you’ll need to use a different product.

Best replacement product for Lithium Hypochlorite

One of the best replacements for lithium is Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC).

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is a stable source of free chlorine and is commonly used for disinfecting drinking water and sanitising swimming pools and spa pools.

It has received approval from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) as a safe and effective source of free chlorine for disinfection and sanitisation of water.

In the case of spa pools and swim spas, NaDCC has a number of advantages over other types of sanitisers including the following;

1. Less chlorine odour

There is less chlorine odour produced when using Sodium dichloroisocyanurate compared to lithium.

2. More effective - so you use less!

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is more effective at sanitising water than lithium, so you need a smaller portion size to sanitise the same amount of water.

3. It costs less - saving your money

In addition to needing to use a smaller portion, sodium dichloroisocyanurate costs less than lithium, meaning you'll spend less to keep your spa water sparkling clean! The APVMA recommended dosage (at the time of writing) for sodium dichloroisocyanurate is 6g per 1000L of water each day.

Based on an average spa size of 1,500L, this will only cost you as little as 20c per day (based on our 1kg Chlorine product) and even less if you purchase larger package sizes. Compare this with current lithium sanitisers on the market which can cost up to $1.45 per day for the recommended dosage.

4. Safe to ship (Not Dangerous Goods)

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is stable and safe for shipping. It is not classified as dangerous goods, meaning it is much easier and cheaper to ship safely.

5. Suitable for warm water

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate sanitiser products that are designed for spas and swim spas are specially formulated to function in water temperatures up to 39 degrees celsius. Other types of chlorine loose their effectiveness in warmer water.

6. It is safe for your spa shell and components

The shell of many spas and swim spas are made from an acrylic material. Some types of sanitisers like bromine in high concentration can cause damage to the acrylic material of spa shells and to the components like jets and headrests.

Chlorine in the form of sodium dichloroisocyanurate has been thoroughly tested and approved by the manufacturers of all Spa World spas and swim spas including Fisher®, Vortex® and Jacuzzi®.
