Stress is the body’s natural way of responding to the events in your life if you are feeling threatened, rushed, or pushed off your point of balance for any reason.
The stress can help you to meet the challenges in your life, but when they are too great or exist for too long they start to have the opposite effects on the body. When it has gone too far it can begin to affect your ability to produce your work, impair your relationships, dramatically change your mood/s, and to begin to erode the quality of your life. Then trying to stay balanced can be very difficult.
You can get wired-tired, overly emotional, restless, withdrawn, shut down or spaced out of focus from life, or become very angry and emotionally agitated.
This mental state then starts to effect the nervous system with a flood of stress hormones (Norepinephrine, Adrenalin, Epinephrine, and Cortisol), your muscles tighten, heart beats faster or more irregularly, breath changes, and digestion can go for long periods without proper breakdown. Stress ignites the Sympathetic Nervous system "Fight or Flight Syndrome" and when it does this it shuts off the " Parasympathetic Nervous System" which controls digestion, calmness, and sleep. If you get stuck too long in the Sympathetic Nervous System you will have digestive, and sleep trouble.
Symptoms from stress can include but are not limited to irritable bowel, illness (colds/flu), minor or major aches and pains in multiple regions, diarrhea/ or constipation, gas, cramping, vertigo, dizziness, shortness of breath, disruption of eating patterns (increasing/decreasing desire), not finishing responsibilities, searching for drugs, alcohol, and sleeping too much to just name a few. The point is getting some focus back into your life and taking control once again. YOU ALWAYS HAVE CHOICE, so the faster you make good choices the faster the stress begins to clear.
Reach out and ask friends for their support. This first step is a critical step in getting better, and not feeling alone. Realise that all things are within your control even when they do not seem it. Work to be optimistic, and try only focusing on the positives until you can break the cycle of the stress. Find ways to calm and soothe you that do not mean doing something unhealthy. Give yourself a break, however small, to allow you some room in your mind to begin making choices on your behalf again. If you are in a stressful situation, just work to describe it, and see where it may have an end. All things end sometime, and the faster that you can perceive an end will help. Also, you can use your spa or swim spa to take a few minutes for yourself. Just the mere choice of allowing yourself a few minutes to soak quietly can truly have a profound effect on your life.
