From Canal to Spa: How a Mandurah Holiday Home Became the Ultimate Weekend Escape
What does it take to turn an already-impressive Brisbane backyard into something truly extraordinary? For this family in Hamilton, the answer was a Jacuzzi® J-495™, flush-set into a premium composite deck with the Brisbane River at your feet.
There's a moment, somewhere between watching a dolphin glide past and sinking your shoulders under warm, bubbling water, when you stop thinking about the week behind you. That's the moment Damian Collins had in mind when he called Spa World.
His newly purchased holiday home at Island Retreat in Wannanup, a canal-front gem in the Mandurah region, already had the view, the jetski, and the dock. What it needed was somewhere to sit and truly take it all in — rain, shine, or the middle of winter when the canal water runs too cold for a swim.
The answer? A luxury spa. The execution? Anything but simple.
The Vision
Just over an hour south of Perth, the Mandurah canals have a way of making you forget the city entirely. That was exactly the appeal for Damian and his partner — a place to decompress, entertain, and spend proper quality time together without feeling like they needed to travel to the other end of the earth to do it.
"We feel like we are a million miles away from Perth, but we are only 80 kms away."
The brief was clear: make the most of this incredible location, year-round. A spa wasn't just a lifestyle addition, it was the thing that would make the property genuinely usable in every season. Even in winter, when the canal water isn't exactly inviting, the family could step outside and into warm, jet-massaged water with an uninterrupted view of the waterway.
They landscaped accordingly. Trees and shrubs that cluttered the canal-facing aspect were removed. The space was opened up, reimagined, and readied for something special.

With a generous seating layout, premium hydrotherapy jets, mood lighting, and Jacuzzi's signature quality and reliability, the J-495™ was the natural fit. It wasn't just a spa that would look at home in this setting, it was one that would earn its place every time the family stepped in.
The mood lighting on the spa, combined with the new external lighting installed as part of the broader renovation, means the space is just as spectacular after dark. In fact, a few passing boats have slowed to admire it.

The Problem-Solving
This is where the story gets interesting. Getting a spa into a standard backyard is one thing. Getting one into a multi-level, canal-adjacent property, with no road access along the waterfront, a glass safety fence already installed, and a canal wall that required engineering certification to protect, is another thing entirely.
The team worked through each challenge methodically.
Power
The property didn't have three-phase power, which the spa required. Electricians traced a route from the meter box, through the garage, down through the garden and retaining walls, and out to the installation point, all while running new external lighting at the same time.
Engineering
The proximity to the canal wall meant load-bearing assessments and formal engineering certification were needed before a single component could be placed. Safety first, always.
The crane
With no viable walkway from the road to the canal level, the only option was to crane the spa in, up and over the top of the garage, then down a full level to the waterside. The glass safety fencing had already been installed before the spa arrived, which gave the customer more than a few nervous moments. The crane operators were confident, though. They threaded the spa in over the fence line and set it down without so much as a scratch. A genuinely impressive piece of work.
The Finish
The installation was completed to an exceptionally high standard, with every detail considered in the context of the wider outdoor space.
Spa placement was deliberate, positioned so the family could step off the boat directly and into the spa, without trailing salt water and sand through the house. The glass fencing wraps the area cleanly, keeping the sightlines open to the canal while meeting all safety requirements.
A wet area and outdoor shower are planned as the next addition, making the whole waterfront zone a seamless, self-contained lifestyle space. Rinse off after the canal, step straight into the spa. Life doesn't get much better than that.
The Result
What started as a holiday home purchase became a year-round sanctuary. Damian and his partner now have a property that genuinely delivers on the promise of the location, warm water, extraordinary views, and the kind of effortless relaxation that most people only dream about.
Boats pass. Dolphins surface. And from the canal side of a beautifully landscaped waterfront home, two people sit in warm bubbling water and feel exactly a million miles from the everyday.
