The owners already had a pool on the lower deck — they wanted an adults-only retreat above it, with uninterrupted views across the suburbs, the river, and the CBD at sunset.
The Vortex® Nitro™ sits nestled into the fifth-floor desert garden, surrounded by river pebbles, agaves, and stepping stones. The dark composite cabinet blends seamlessly with the charcoal cladding of the renovated home. Palm trees frame the space — a rooftop retreat that feels completely resolved.

The property started as a dilapidated 1940s Queenslander perched on a steep hillside — concrete stumps, timber frames, peeling paint, and the bones of something extraordinary hiding behind decades of neglect.
The owners' vision was ambitious: a full five-storey transformation, with a landscape concept they called the 'volcano model', lush tropical palms and ferns at ground level, each floor becoming progressively drier and more sculptural as you ascend, culminating in a fifth-floor desert garden of cacti, agaves, corten steel planters, and river pebbles. The Vortex Nitro would sit at the very top as the crown jewel of the adults' retreat.
The installation presented three significant challenges that required precise coordination between Spa World, the construction team, and the client.
Fifth-Floor Crane Lift: There was no road access to the upper deck. The Vortex Nitro had to be craned directly from street level to the fifth floor. The delivery window was extremely tight — the construction crane was still on site during the final stages of the build, and the spa had to arrive and be placed during that narrow window before the crane was demobilised.
Structural Engineering: The fifth-floor slab is all concrete, with the spa positioned directly above the lift shaft — the only structural point on that level capable of bearing the full weight of a filled spa. There was no margin for error in placement.
Precision Timing: Everything had to be coordinated to the day. The spa arrived on schedule, the crane was in position, and the lift was executed without delays. A result that required months of planning across multiple contractors to pull off cleanly.
The volcano concept gave the entire property a coherent identity from ground to rooftop. The fifth-floor desert garden was designed specifically to complement the Vortex® Nitro™.
The dark composite timber cabinet sits naturally against the grey river pebbles and sculptural desert planting, with corten steel raised garden beds providing warmth and contrast. The result feels designed as one, not a spa dropped into a garden, but a space conceived around it.
The transformation is complete. A derelict 1940s Queenslander is now a five-storey Brisbane masterpiece, and at the very top, a Vortex® Nitro™ commands the best rooftop view in the city.
Craned to the fifth floor, engineered to the load point, and set into a desert garden designed around it, the spa looks like it was always meant to be there. Uninterrupted views across Brisbane's suburbs, the river, and the CBD skyline, sunrise to sunset, every day of the year.
