From overgrown to extraordinary

When a heritage home finally gets the outdoor space it deserves, the result is something the whole family gathers around every single day.

Some outdoor spaces sit waiting for a vision. This one waited decades. When Lydia Maskell, an interior designer, and her builder husband bought their 1900s heritage home in Launceston, Tasmania, the backyard was completely overgrown, the kind of blank canvas that either overwhelms you or excites you. For an interior designer and her builder husband, it was the latter.

"To renovate a Heritage home that has so much character, and then to have this additional space we hadn't yet touched, gave us the opportunity to make something truly special."

Designing a space that feels like home

With the main house beautifully restored, their attention turned to the underutilised outdoor area alongside it.

Tasmania spa relaxation

Drawing on Lydia's design expertise, she anchored the colour palette to the main house, warm, light, and bright tones that could lift what had always been a darker corner of the property. The spa pool became the centrepiece. The hero piece, as Lydia puts it.

"Because it's a darker area, we really wanted to lighten it up," Lydia explains. "The colours we chose are warm and bright, and the spa itself was always going to be the focal point."

Buying local, buying with confidence

When it came to choosing the spa itself, they did their research. There were cheaper options available, and the temptation to shop online was real, but the couple kept coming back to one question: could they trust the quality?

Vortex® Titanium™ hydrotherapy

"We looked at other options that were maybe cheaper," she admits. "But we couldn't really rely on the quality of those products." Spa World was local, easy to visit in person, and offered something online retailers simply can't: the chance to actually see, touch and feel what they were buying.

"We could see the quality of it," Lydia says. "And the customer service when we went in was really impressive. It made it easy to buy local rather than just clicking online."

Pergola coverage for comfort and protection

The pergola plays an important practical role in this installation, helping turn the spa area into a more comfortable and usable outdoor zone. It provides welcome shade, reduces leaf debris from the surrounding established trees, and helps protect the space from harsh sun, making the Vortex® Titanium™ more enjoyable to use throughout the day and across the seasons.

Just as importantly, the pergola allows the natural greenery to remain a key part of the design. Rather than blocking out the garden, it works with the trees and planting to create privacy, softness, and a more relaxed atmosphere without making the space feel enclosed or heavy.

A new family ritual

Since it went in, the Vortex® Titanium™ has become part of everyday life. The youngest daughter learned to swim in it.

Weekend gatherings with friends now spill naturally from inside to outside, adults in the spa while the kids play in the nearby cubby house, everyone in view, everyone together.

"We do like to entertain," Lydia says. "We have a lot of young families over, and there's a great flow, some in the spa, some outside, and it's a safe, fun environment for everyone."

The surprises that really matter

There were two things they didn't expect. The first: how easy it would be to maintain. "There's absolutely no maintenance," Lydia says with a laugh, before clarifying that her builder husband would describe it more accurately as minimal. Either way, far easier than anticipated.

The second: their energy bills. "We were prepared for the bills to go up and wondering how much extra it was going to cost," Lydia says. "But we've been pleasantly surprised. We haven't noticed a great increase at all."

What started as an overgrown blank canvas is now the most-used space on the property. The heritage home finally has an outdoor area to match its character, and a family that gathers around it every chance they get.
